Fear Commitment? One Night Stand Cycle Oregon

July 14th, 2010 by Matt Zaffino

I love to cycle. I love Oregon. I love Cycle Oregon. But the annual week-long ride that targets a different, special and scenic corner of Oregon every second week of September requires a commitment. For me, the question has always been do I use a week of coveted vacation time to go places, as great as they are, that I’ve either a) already been to or b) can visit on a weekend? Other than 2003, when I did live shots for KGW News Channel 8 early evening newscasts, my answer has been a regrettable no.

But the weekend version of Cycle Oregon requires no such long-term ( hey a week IS long-term in some frames of reference) commitment. And it’s a blast. No one organizes a bike ride better than the Cycle Oregon folks. This years ride, which happens this weekend, is based out of Western Oregon University in Monmouth, OR, about an hour south of Portland. Haven’t been riding much? No excuse, there are loops ranging from as easy 20 miles up to an ambitious 100 miles each day. From the Monmouth hub, rides spread out like spokes on a bike wheel, designed to support a wide variety of cycling desires. Saturday rides stretch east across the Willamette Valley before returning to Monmouth for the traditional Cycle Oregon feast that’s included in the registration fee. There’s also live entertainment and a variety of sleeping options from camping to staying in dorms. The Sunday rides go west from Monmouth, with distances again ranging from easy to exhausting.

I did the weekend ride in 2008 when we hubbed at Fort Stevens State Park just south of Astoria.  It was SO much fun! The riding was splendid but what makes Cycle Oregon so great is the people. I rode with some Portland cycling pals, and ran into some old friends too. And of course, you make new friends. Even if it’s just for one weekend.
